Somaly Mam Foundation Hosts Successful Launch at United Nations

The Somaly Mam Foundation officially launched Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in New York City at the United Nations. The event was preceded by the premier of Holly a movie produced by Priority Films. Visit www.priorityfilms.com to learn more about the film and its locations.

Daryl Hannah served as the M.C. for the event, which drew over 250 people including representatives from Vital Voices, LexisNexis (Somaly Mam Foundation corporate sponsor), government officials, Priority Films, and celebrities including honorary event committee member Ally Sheedy, actress Nicolette Hart and comedian Horatio Sanz.

The girls from AFESIP’s centers designed scarves, jewelry and other items that were given as gifts to individuals as they made their donation to the foundation. The evening was a success, bringing tens of thousands of seed funding to help grow the Somaly Mam Foundation and fund AFESIP Cambodia.

Somaly Mam Receives Honorary Degree

On Friday, November 9, 2007, human rights activist Somaly Mam received an honorary doctor of public service from Regis University for her efforts to combat the sex slave trade. Regis president, Father Michael J. Sheeran, S.J. applauded Mam’s work “to bring change and make a real difference in our world” and her “enduring commitment to the service of the people.” Mam related her experience both as a victim and an activist to a crowd of over 500 in the St. John Francis Regis Chapel on the University’s campus. The event was sponsored by several academic departments at Regis University and Sassy 107.1, which featured an on-air interview with Mam.
